In a year when we have seen some of the most amazing football been played, and probably one of the biggest title upset in football history, it is difficult to pick out a dream team without some headaches.
From Leicester City’s title winning team to Portugal’s unpredictable Euro win; Chile’s Copa America Centenario victory to Real Madrid’d 11th UEFA Champions League trophy, we can count a host of players who have contributed their quota to make football worth seeing this year.
However, only 11 players make a team and we have the big task of bringing you Gidifeed’s football team of 2016.
Goalkeeper – Gigi Buffon
It is not every year you see a goalkeeper of that age still pulling up great saves and showing off great leadership skills. The 38-year old makes our team after another title with Juventus and a commanding performance with Italy at Euros.
Right Fullback – Dani Carvajal
The Real Madrid man might not be that celebrated but he is arguably the best in his position across Europe. Constantly running up the pitch to help the attack, without forgetting his defensive duties, and putting in goals once in a while, he truly deserves to make our list.
Left Fullback – Raphaël Guerreiro
The 23 year old had amazing tournament as Portugal squeezed their way to become European champions, and is continuing that fine form with German club Borussia Dortmund.
Centre Back – Pepe
The hard tackling defender was one of the standout performers as Real Madrid secured another Champions league victory, and he crowned all that by leading the defence line for Portugal as they took home the Euro 2016 trophy.
Centre Back – Gerard Pique
Calm, collected and with an eye for a pass that probably surpasses most midfielders. Pique stood tall in Barcelona’s defence as they cruised to another title win in 2016.
Defensive Midfielder -Ngolo Kante
Arguably the best performer in his position the whole of last season. The French midfielder, often compared to the great Claude Makelele, was one of the major reasons Leicester City claimed a surprise league title in the Premier League, and since his move to Chelsea, he has been a major part of Antonio Conte’s team.
Central Midfield – Toni Kroos
Juventus are close to throwing out over $70m for the German midfielder as they look for a replacement for Andrea Pirlo. The Real Madrid star is simply a pass master, and with Kante ready to do most of the dirty work, he is a perfect fit for our midfield.
Attacking Midfield – Lionel Messi
Messi is simply magic! We should just stop there but with the three forward roles already filled, messi is deployed in an attacking midfield role in our team. Of course he is capable of playing the role, it is why many consider him as the greatest of all time.
Left Wing Forward – Neymar
For his role in inspiring Brazil to a first-ever Olympic medal after the disappointment of London 2012, Neymar gets into our team. He was also a major part of Barcelona’s title winning team.
Right Wing Forward -Antoine Griezmann
The Frenchman has had an amazing year with both club and country and was unlucky to lose both finals of the UEFA champions league and Euro 2016.
Centre Forward – Cristiano Ronaldo
In spite of all the criticism, Ronaldo has had the most amazing year of them all. The Champions League, Euros, Balon d’Or, FIFA Club World Cup, Super Cup…name it! The Portuguese captain has won them all, scoring goals along the way.
Manager – Zinedine Zidane
Zidane took over from Rafa Benitez and since then has led Real Madrid to the UEFA Champions league trophy, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. The French manager has lost only two games in charge of the Los Blancos.
Special mentions include – Luis Suarez, Alexis Sanchez, Riyad Mahrez, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo and Gareth Bale.
